Excerpt 1 - I Have a Dream - Excerpt 1
Five score years ago, ... a shameful condition.

OUR WORDS - 100 years ago, slaves were declared free, but now, 100 years later we are still not free. We are living in poverty and segregation, 100 years later we are still bound by the chains of discrimination.

Excerpt 2 - I Have a Dream -- Excerpt 2
In a sense ... the security of justice.

OUR WORDS - We were granted freedom allowing both Black and White Americans freedom. We were not allowed this though, us Black Americans were giving a false truth, and we are here in Washington to claim what was promised to us. To cash our check of freedom, and not believe that that the bank of justice is bankrupt, we are here to gain our freedom.

Excerpt 3 - I Have a Dream -- Excerpt 3
We have also come ... Now is the time.

OUR WORDS - The freedom of African Americans needs to happen now, much of the Nation believes our Civil rights are moving to fast, but to us it is not moving fast enough. This needs to happen now.

Excerpt 4 - I Have a Dream -- Excerpt 4
But there is something ... soul force.

OUR WORDS - This cannot be violent, we must gain our freedom in a peaceful way, or with"soul force".

Excerpt 5 - I Have a Dream -- Excerpt 5
The marvelous new militancy ... We cannot turn back.

OUR WORDS - We have to work together to gain our freedom. We cant just work with African Americans, we have to work with whites in order to receive our freedom.

Excerpt 6 - I Have a Dream -- Excerpt 6
There are those ... like a mighty stream."

OUR WORDS - We will never be satisfied, or stop fighting until we are granted 100% freedom. All African Americans must gain freedom, until then we will not be satisfied. We demand freedom, equality, and desegregation.

Excerpt 7 - I Have a Dream - Excerpt 7
And so even though ... I have a dream today!

OUR WORDS - We want there to be freedom and equality for black people all over the entire nation, even in the most segregated and racist areas.

Excerpt 8 - I Have a Dream - Excerpt 8

And this will be the day ... we are free at last!

OUR WORDS - That this day will help us come closer to freedom, and show America that we want it now!

AFTER

If we didn't get to it in class, watch 16th Street to see what happened right after the March.

KING

Read the essay from **TIME 100 - Martin Luther King** . As you do, respond to the following questions
Why does the author feel that whites owe King the greatest debt?
For liberating them from the racism that this nation has felt since its beginning.

Was King "the right man at the right time"?
Yes, because the Civil Rights movement was moving forward, but slowly, and MLK was something that really pushed it forward. His "I Have a Dream" speech made many people realize that it is time for equality, and that African Americans need equality and desegregation.

Would King be upset with the current use of his most often quoted line? Why or why not?I think King would be happy, because he wouldnt want his quote to be used in the wrong context, that is why his family copyrighted it, so it would only be able to be used in the way King would want it to be used.

MEMORIALS

There are many memorials to King around the United States, and there will soon be a new one in Washington D.C.! Check out some of the links below, and look at the video of the new National Memorial.
