Legislation and Politics Civil Rights laws, affirmative action laws, representation in state and federal government, voting statistics
B
Civil Rights laws have been passed and enforced by the government
While the number of African Americans and Hispanics in the government is not near the percentage of population, the numbers are increasing every year
We have an African American president
African Americans vote at nearly the same rate as the average population, but Hispanics are much lower (average around 60% registering, African American 58%, Hispanic 28%)
Encourage minorities to continue to become active in politics, possibly through schools
Push for voter registration drives and voter eductaion in the Hispanic community, possibly with bilingual voting ballots
Employment
Number of employed / unemployed, types of jobs, business ownership
C+
71.4% of all white men had jobs while 66.7% of African Americans were employed in 2004.
From 1980 to approximately 2012 about 36.8 million more whites will be working, while only 8.9 million more African Americans will have jobs.
Unemployment for African Americans that are between the age of 16 and 24 has lowered.
The average salary for all workers has increased from about $576 to $638.
Although the work force for African Americans is increasing, white people still are gaining a higher salary, and control most of the work force
The amount of whites with jobs compared to the amount of African Americans with jobs shows that white people have a much larger percent of the work in the united states.
I think that work places should start to higher more African Americans, because even though more are being hired and treated equally there still is visible segregation.
Education Graduation rates, test scores, college enrollment, educational attainment
B-
In 2003, the overall whites that were receiving an education from ages 3-34 was 55,218,000, while the overall African Americans receiving an education from ages 3-34 was 10,971,000.
Blacks had a higher enrollment rate than whites in 2004
Almost as many Blacks graduate from high school as whites
Blacks are 10% below whites in the number of graduates of college
Almost same amount of whites have dropped out as Blacks in 2003
Blacks are receiving more education and are no longer in segregated schools, but they still get much less education then whites though
I think that teachers and the school board should focus on keeping kids in school and getting kids into school, so there is higher amounts of education for every race.
Income and Poverty Average income, number below poverty level
A
In 1980, the average income for all house holds is about $17,000 but in 2004 the average increased to $43,318
The average income for blacks has increased dramatically since 1980
Hispanic income is at about $40,000 when in 1980 it was about $13,500
