THE YALTA CONFERENCE
  • Meeting near the end of WWII - big 3 meet to discuss post war Europe
  • Germany will be divided, controlled by the Allies
  • Liberated Eastern European countries will have new elections
  • United Nations will be formed

THE UNITED NATIONS
  • A group of Nations created to keep peace and to solve problems without violence
  • US, England, France, Soviet Union, and China are all permanent members, who have the power to veto something.
  • If one of the permanent nations wont do something then the UN wont do it
CONTAINMENT
  • The Iron Curtain descended
  • Try to keep communism from growing any larger or spreading into any more areas
  • USSR takes over eastern Europe- resulting in a spread of communism,

THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE
  • Truman requested $400 million dollars to aid Turkey and Greece to keep communism from spreading to the US
  • Was declared by Harry S. Truman on March 12, 1947
  • Many people disagreed with it and thought the US wasn't ready to handle the situation alone
THE MARSHALL PLAN
  • 597 million dollars was spent in order to stop the spread of communism in Berlin
  • Help rebuild damage from WWII to prevent Berlin from being invaded again
  • US is Spiderman! With great power comes great responsibility

THE BERLIN AIRLIFT
  • Soviet guards began to halt trains, cars, and other transportation on the autobahn on June 19th
  • On June 21st Soviets blocked a US military supply train on its way to Berlin and made it turn around
  • The US decided that they would have to airlift supplies to Berlin if they wanted to get to them
  • On June 24th, 1948 the first plane took off by July 1st planes started to arrive in groups delivering more and more supplies
  • Black Friday occurred when 3 air crafts crashed because of rain, all other air crafts were ordered to return home.
  • Operation Little Vittles- pilots began to drop supplies and goodies to children in Berlin
NATO
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization
  • Established when the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty happened on April 4th, 1489
  • Headquarters is located in Brussels, Berlin

MCCARTHYISM
  • A political way of making rash decisions, accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason with no real evidence
  • the term comes from Senator Joseph McCarthy, where he would make accusations with no evidence of communism, and where it was spreading.
  • The term is now used to describe reckless accusations
THE SPACE RACE

  • An informal "competition" between the US and the USSR on which could make the furthest advancements to space before the other
  • The Space Race began after the launch of Sputnik on October 4th 1957
  • The Space Race played a big role in the Cold War, because space technology boosted moral and showed the opponent that they could be attacked from space
